Arab Israeli Lawmaker Apologizes for Remarks on October 7th Massacre

Sami Abu Shehadeh, an Arab Israeli lawmaker, appeared before the Central Elections Committee on Wednesday to defend himself against a request to disqualify him from running for the Knesset. The committee was considering whether his past statements, particularly regarding the October 7th Hamas attacks, constituted grounds for disqualification.

During the hearing, Abu Shehadeh stated, "I don't believe I need to explain myself. Throughout my years in politics, I have not supported violence or any armed struggle." He was pressed to clarify his earlier description of the October 7th events as a "historic event."

Responding to this, Abu Shehadeh explained, "I truly did not know the extent of the atrocities. I should not have written that article." He appeared to backtrack on his previous characterization of the massacre, suggesting he was unaware of the full scope of the violence when he made the initial statement. The committee's decision on his candidacy is pending.
