Israel's Yisrael Beytenu Party to Seek Disqualification of Arab Parties and MKs

The Yisrael Beytenu party announced it will vote to disqualify the Arab parties Ra'am and the United List, along with candidates Ofer Cassif and Sami Abu Shehadeh, during the Central Elections Committee's review of appeals. The party, led by Avigdor Lieberman, stated that any future Zionist government must prioritize eliminating Hamas, and any party opposing this goal has no place in the Knesset. Yisrael Beytenu's statement explicitly mentioned their intention to vote for the disqualification of the United List, Ra'am, Cassif, and Abu Shehadeh.

Last week, the Otzma Yehudit party filed a petition to prevent Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh from running. This appeal cites a statement Abu Shehadeh made on October 8, 2023, where he described the Hamas attack as a "significant historical event militarily, politically, and strategically." The petitioners are invoking Article 7A of the Basic Law: Knesset, which allows for the disqualification of lists or candidates who support the armed struggle of an enemy state or terrorist organization against Israel.

Bereaved families and the organization B'Tsalmo have also requested the disqualification of MK Ofer Cassif. Separately, the Choosing Life Forum filed a petition against Ra'am, supported by a lengthy study including findings from judicial and security authorities.

The Central Elections Committee is tasked with reviewing these various requests. Any decisions made by the committee can subsequently be appealed to the Supreme Court.
