Israeli Election Committee Debates Disqualifying Arab Candidates and Parties

The Central Elections Committee convened on Wednesday to hear petitions seeking to disqualify candidates and parties from participating in the upcoming elections. The deliberations, expected to last two days and chaired by Judge Noam Sohlberg, will address several high-profile cases.

The committee's first session focused on a petition filed by the Likud party to disqualify Knesset Member Ofer Cassif of the Hadash-Ta'al party. Following this, the committee was scheduled to hear a petition from the Otzma Yehudit party against Sami Abu Shehadeh, chairman of the Balad party.

Further petitions under consideration include one from Otzma Yehudit, Likud, and the "Bochrim BeChaim" forum seeking to disqualify the Ra'am party. The committee will also discuss disqualification requests against the Joint List, Ra'am, Hadash, and the Religious Zionism party.

On the first day of hearings, the committee was also set to address a petition by Likud and the "Orot HaShachar" party demanding the disqualification of the Joint List and Balad from the election race.
