UK Prime Minister Condemns Gaza Actions, Defends Sanctions on Israeli Settlements

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delivered a strong speech at the UN General Assembly, condemning Israel's actions in the West Bank and defending his government's sanctions against Israeli settlements, including an import ban on goods from the region. Sunak stated, "We unequivocally condemned the events of October 7th. We continue to condemn Hamas and stand with Israel against the ongoing threats, including from Iran, to the State of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide." However, he added, "This does not justify the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza or the West Bank." He further emphasized that the UK "will not stand by as terrible suffering mounts, and the vision of a two-state solution is attacked."

The speech comes amid a severe diplomatic crisis between Israel and the UK. In response to the British sanctions, Israel announced retaliatory measures, including closing the British Consulate in Jerusalem within 30 days and barring 11 British parliament members from entering Israel. Foreign Minister G Gideon Sa'ar criticized the British decision, calling the accusations by the UK's Labour government "scandalous and false."

According to foreign reports, the Trump administration did not oppose the British initiative. Then-US President Donald Trump commented that he would speak with Israel to understand their considerations. Meanwhile, senior officials in London are reportedly considering escalating the sanctions regime. "Channel 12 News" reported that the possibility of imposing sanctions on Israeli banks that facilitate the development of West Bank settlements, such as by providing mortgages for construction beyond the Green Line, is being examined. Israeli retail chains could also face British sanctions. These discussions for an expanded sanctions package are ongoing and are expected to conclude within six to nine months, potentially having a profound impact on the Israeli economy.
