Nvidia Establishes New AI Research Group in Israel for Medical Breakthroughs

Nvidia's Chief Technology Officer, Michael Kagan, has established a new research group within Nvidia's Israel development center, focused on advancing medical and scientific breakthroughs. This initiative operates under Nvidia's global CTO office, headed by Kagan, a co-founder of Mellanox and a senior Israeli executive at Nvidia who reports directly to CEO Jensen Huang. The group, named Applied AI Architecture, is currently employing several researchers in Israel, with plans to hire dozens more in the coming year. Job openings for researchers are already posted on Nvidia's website for its Tel Aviv offices.

The group is led by Dr. Nati Daniel, who holds a doctorate in artificial intelligence from the Technion and has previously held senior positions at Intel, GE, and Huawei. The core idea is to leverage AI as a catalyst for scientific and medical discoveries, aiming for long-term research that matures into technologies integrated into Nvidia's systems. While Nvidia operates similar research groups globally, the Israel-based unit's unique position within the CTO's office signals its strategic importance.

The research model will involve internal research alongside collaborations with medical institutions. Nvidia chose Israel due to its advanced AI centers. The group is already collaborating with Sheba Medical Center, the first hospital outside the U.S. to partner with OpenAI, and Mount Sinai in New York. Together, they are developing a genomic foundation model (gFM) to aid research into the 98% of the human genome that remains under-explored.

This project aims to identify new disease prevention methods, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and advance personalized treatments. The group is also involved in a global collaboration with Eli Lilly, a $1 billion, five-year initiative to accelerate drug discovery and development using AI, integrating genomic, sequence, chemistry, biology, and cell context data. Additionally, the team is contributing to GENMAT, an EU-funded international research project developing AI tools to speed up the discovery of new materials for industries like aviation, automotive, and pharmaceuticals.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's decision to expand development activities in Israel is expected to have significant macroeconomic implications for the country, impacting exports, GDP, taxes, and the national budget. Given Nvidia's strong financial forecasts, its relationship with Israel is anticipated to grow further.
