Yair Netanyahu Evacuated to Israel Amid Alleged Iranian Threat

Yair Netanyahu, the 35-year-old son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was urgently evacuated from his residence near Miami to Israel in December 2025 due to a significant Iranian threat, according to the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency). The Shin Bet confirmed the evacuation was a response to a serious threat, though details remain scarce. The incident came to light following an interview by Prime Minister Netanyahu on August 24, 2026, where he mentioned Iran's attempt on one of his sons' lives. American news outlet Newsmax reported two days later that the target was Yair Netanyahu and that he was hastily removed from his home in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

The decision to evacuate Netanyahu was made after Israeli intelligence reportedly discovered in December 2025 that Iranian agents were gathering information on his whereabouts and movements. "Given the significant threat, a decision was made to urgently extract Yair Netanyahu and his security detail back to Israel," the Shin Bet stated. Reports suggest that two security teams from the entourage of then-visiting President Isaac Herzog in New York assisted in the extraction. The timing of the report, eight months after the alleged incident, has drawn scrutiny, particularly as it coincided with debates over security arrangements for political rivals of the Prime Minister.

Netanyahu has been under Shin Bet security protection even though he holds no public office. While residing in Miami from April 2023, the cost of his security detail was estimated at $1.1 to $1.6 million annually. This security detail was approved for five years beyond his father's term as Prime Minister, until the end of 2031, following a decision by the Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet Affairs in July 2026, citing a "high lifelong threat level" to the family. Netanyahu himself stated his move to Miami in 2023 was due to the protests against the government's judicial overhaul, claiming the prosecution, Shin Bet, and police had "abandoned" them.

This incident highlights ongoing controversies surrounding Yair Netanyahu, including his possession of a diplomatic passport despite not being entitled to one according to Foreign Ministry officials, and his summons for questioning in June 2025 regarding the passport's issuance. He has also been involved in numerous defamation lawsuits, having been ordered to pay approximately 750,000 shekels (about $200,000) in damages and legal costs by February 2025. His planned appointment as head of the information department at the World Zionist Organization was canceled in late 2025 following public outcry.
