Israeli Parties Seek to Disqualify Arab Lawmaker Over Hamas Attack Remarks

Two Israeli political parties, "Yashar" led by Gadi Eisenkot and "Otzma Yehudit," have formally requested the disqualification of Arab Israeli lawmaker Sami Abu Shehadeh from running in the upcoming Knesset elections. The "Yashar" party announced its support for the disqualification on Tuesday, citing Abu Shehadeh's description of the Hamas attack on October 7th as a "historically important event militarily, politically, and strategically." This follows a similar petition filed by "Otzma Yehudit" last week.

Meanwhile, the Central Elections Committee, chaired by Judge Noam Sohlberg, has ruled that the hearing on Abu Shehadeh's disqualification will proceed as scheduled. Abu Shehadeh had requested a postponement due to his hospitalization at Rambam Hospital following an injury. Sohlberg decided that Abu Shehadeh could participate in the hearing remotely via video conference, ensuring the proceedings would not be delayed.

Political commentator Amit Segal strongly criticized Abu Shehadeh on the "Shva" television program, accusing him of hypocrisy and cowardice. "You say, 'I condemn harming innocent civilians.' Excuse me? Say it, are you doing the Ayman Odeh trick on us? What about the 386 IDF soldiers? Say your truth, Abu Shehadeh. Say your truth, you scumbag. Say you are for killing IDF soldiers. You don't dare to say it perhaps, I hope it will be revealed there in the hearing. You are for kidnapping the lookouts, for the killing and murder of the lookouts, for invading the borders of the State of Israel," Segal stated.

Segal further argued that lessons learned from the October 7th attacks necessitate an end to the Supreme Court's "systematic protection" of individuals from Arab parties who support terrorism. He expressed his cautious assessment that this protection is likely to cease.
