Israeli Lawmaker Calls to Disqualify Arab Party Leader Over War Remarks

Member of Knesset Chili Tropper has called for the disqualification of Sami Abu Shehadeh, the chairman of the Balad party, from running for the Knesset. The demand stems from statements Abu Shehadeh published on the second day of the Israel-Hamas war, October 8, as the scale of the Hamas attacks and hostage crisis became apparent.

Tropper highlighted Abu Shehadeh's post which described the events as "a significant historical event militarily, politically, and strategically," adding, "If small, besieged Gaza was able to do this, others can do it more effectively and easily." Tropper argued that such statements constitute clear legal grounds for disqualification from Knesset candidacy.

"Support for the armed struggle of a terror organization against Israel is grounds for disqualifying a candidate," Tropper stated. "Abu Shehadeh must be disqualified from running for the Knesset."
