Israel Extends Home Front Command Emergency Status Amid Security Concerns

The Israeli government approved an extension of the state of emergency for the Home Front Command until October 6. The decision was made during a bi-weekly telephone poll of ministers on Tuesday. The government is also expected to soon approve a measure allowing the call-up of 200,000 reserve soldiers, according to Israel Hayom.

Sources in the Israeli military clarified that this does not mean immediate mobilization but rather the continuation of the authority to call up reserves if necessary. The Ministry of Defense stated that the number of reservists potentially deployable under the new decision is approximately 40,000 fewer than under a similar decision made two months prior.

The extension of the emergency status and the approval for reserve troop call-ups are reportedly linked to ongoing security tensions and repeated warnings from Defense Minister Israel Katz. Katz had threatened to resume a forceful war on Gaza and expel all Gazans from Gaza City, citing intelligence information about Hamas's alleged intentions and the capture of an Israeli soldier in the Gaza Strip.
