U.S. Vice President JD Vance said at the opening of talks between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the war that the sides had made significant progress in the past few hours. The negotiations were taking place at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland.
Vance said the key issue was whether the parties could permanently reshape relations in the Middle East. He described diplomacy as the tool for doing so, saying the goal was to work together to change the region.
He added that Iran had been a source of regional instability. According to Vance, President Donald Trump asked U.S. officials to “open a new page” and fundamentally change America’s relationship with the Iranian people.
