Israel Extends National State of Emergency Until October 6

The Israeli government has approved the extension of the nationwide state of emergency for the home front until October 6, citing ongoing security concerns over potential attacks from Iran and Lebanon. This decision will maintain special authorities for government agencies for over seven months.

The measure, initiated by the Defense Minister, follows intelligence reports indicating a persistent, real danger of strikes against the civilian population due to regional instability. The draft proposal was circulated to ministers for expedited approval.

The current declaration was set to expire, requiring formal ratification by the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Legal counsel confirmed that this constitutes a continuous extension since late February, and if approved, the home front's special regime will have been in effect for over seven consecutive months. Legal advisors found no impediments to the extension, given existing defense operational needs.

Under the declaration, the IDF Home Front Command retains the legal authority to implement emergency directives based on operational circumstances. These can include mandatory shelter-in-place protocols, restrictions on gatherings and educational institutions, and civil defense instructions. Currently, no specific public restrictions are in place.

The initial declaration was made in late February, coinciding with operations against Iran, and has been extended multiple times since. Defense officials emphasize that despite situational changes, significant operational uncertainty and threats from Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen persist.
