Maccabi Tel Aviv Missed Out on Multi-Million Euro Transfer Target

Maccabi Tel Aviv's potential multi-million euro acquisition of French midfielder Morgan Blanchet collapsed at the last minute during the summer transfer window due to an inability to free up a foreign player spot on the roster. Frederic Arpinon, the professional manager for French club Metz, revealed that negotiations were advanced and the deal was nearly finalized.

The primary obstacle was not Blanchet's contract terms, but Maccabi Tel Aviv's technical difficulty in releasing another foreign player to make room. Arpinon stated, "Everything was almost closed with the Israeli club that wanted to sign him, but at the last moment the transfer fell through because they couldn't release another player."

According to Sport Channel, the player expected to make way for Blanchet was Moldovan striker Ion Nicolaescu. Nicolaescu was reportedly close to a loan move to Hapoel Ramat Gan, but this deal did not materialize in time, leaving him on Maccabi Tel Aviv's roster and consequently blocking Blanchet's transfer.

The deal would have involved a purchase or a loan with an option to buy Blanchet from Metz, along with a multi-year contract for the 22-year-old player. With Blanchet's market value estimated at around 900,000 euros and considering a young foreign player's salary in the Israeli Premier League could be hundreds of thousands of euros annually, the total investment by Maccabi Tel Aviv was projected to be several million euros.
