Netanyahu's UN Visit Pared Down to Hours, Texas Trip Canceled

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's upcoming visit to the United States will be exceptionally brief, with his schedule significantly shortened and a planned trip to Texas canceled. Netanyahu is now slated to arrive in New York on Thursday morning, just hours before his address at the UN General Assembly, scheduled for 2:00 PM local time. He is expected to depart the U.S. shortly after his speech, potentially not even staying overnight.

The visit's itinerary has undergone several changes. Initially, Netanyahu was scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, and a trip to Texas, including a meeting with Elon Musk and a potential visit to SpaceX facilities, was added. However, this Texas leg was canceled late last week, reportedly at Netanyahu's decision, despite a preliminary team having already arrived in the U.S. for preparations.

Logistical challenges, including the inability of the "Wing of Zion" aircraft to fly directly to Texas without a refueling stop, were cited as complex factors. Some delegation members might have had to travel separately on commercial flights. However, these logistical difficulties were not officially stated as the reason for the cancellation.

A planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is also not on the current schedule. According to a senior U.S. official, Netanyahu is not among the leaders Trump is expected to meet on the sidelines of the UN assembly. Another U.S. official noted that Netanyahu might arrive in New York only after Trump has already departed. Attempts to arrange a meeting between the two leaders continued even when the visit was more extensive, but current schedules indicate they will not be in the city concurrently.

While Netanyahu addresses the UN, Trump is expected to be in Washington D.C. for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, discussing issues such as Iran, trade relations, Taiwan, and artificial intelligence. The most significant meeting currently scheduled for Netanyahu during his visit is with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York, although the final schedule remains unconfirmed. Rubio is already in New York for the UN assembly week, holding policy meetings with visiting leaders.
