Israel's Attorney General to Rule on Ra'am Party's Election Eligibility
Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, is required to submit her position by 2:00 PM today to the Central Elections Committee regarding the Likud party's request to disqualify the Ra'am party from running in the 26th Knesset elections. The committee has stated that no further extensions will be granted.
The Likud filed its disqualification request several weeks ago, arguing that Ra'am's activities provide grounds for disqualification under Section 7A of the Basic Law: The Knesset. These grounds include denying the existence of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and supporting armed struggle against the country.
Otzma Yehudit and Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also submitted a separate request to disqualify Ra'am and its chairman, Mansour Abbas. Their petition cited alleged ties between elements within Ra'am, the Islamic Movement, and organizations that operated on their behalf.
Baharav-Miara must now present the state's stance on the matter by the 2:00 PM deadline. The Elections Committee has emphasized that this deadline is final and will not be extended.
