Gazan Journalist Reveals He Withheld Footage of Hamas Abducting Israelis

Motaz Azaiza, a Gazan photographer and journalist who gained international prominence during the recent conflict and was recognized by Time magazine, has revealed that he documented an angry Gazan mob assaulting Israeli hostages on October 7th. Azaiza, who was reporting from Gaza at the time, stated in a podcast interview that he decided not to release the footage, fearing it would be used by Israeli security forces to identify and eliminate those involved.

"I knew Israel would use these videos to identify every person who was there and eliminate him," Azaiza explained, adding that he did not want to be indirectly responsible for their deaths for the sake of online views. He noted that since the videos were never published, their content and the identities of those involved cannot be independently verified.

Azaiza also shed light on Hamas's control over journalists in Gaza. He described a WhatsApp group called "Smart," managed by a Hamas media operative, which he claims is used to organize campaigns and smear journalists critical of Hamas rule. He stated that photographers in Gaza are accustomed to lowering their cameras if someone speaks negatively about Hamas.

Azaiza shared a personal experience where his own details were leaked and he faced a social media backlash after publishing a video of a Gaza resident cursing Hamas. Azaiza left Gaza about four months after the war began and currently resides in Qatar. He criticized Hamas for relentlessly pursuing journalists who attempt to report the reality of the situation.
