Rehovot Schools Focus on Safe Pedestrian Practices

Over the past few weeks, the Road Safety Department in Rehovot has conducted educational activities in several city schools to reinforce safe crossing rules and raise awareness about the importance of vigilance and avoiding distractions while traveling to and from school. These sessions, part of an ongoing municipal education program, involved department representatives speaking with students about stopping before crossing, looking both ways, avoiding distractions, and using designated crossing areas. Participants also received "traffic light popsicles" at the end of the day.

The core message emphasized to the children was the need for constant alertness and caution, even on familiar routes. This initiative is part of the department's annual work plan, which includes various educational programs tailored to different age groups to equip students with practical skills for safe public space behavior.

Future plans include lectures for middle and high school students featuring a severe road accident victim who uses a wheelchair. His personal story aims to highlight the consequences of traffic accidents and the importance of personal responsibility, sound decision-making, and avoiding dangerous road behaviors.

Additionally, a new program for elementary schools will utilize a mobile training center for road safety education. Students will engage in simulations and role-playing, taking on roles such as drivers, pedestrians, police officers, and inspectors to understand different road user perspectives and practice safe conduct. The department is also promoting safe cycling and e-scooter riding, proper crossing techniques, and the dangers of distraction and mobile phone use. The "Safety Patrols" program, encouraging students to take responsibility for their peers' safety, will also continue.
