Haaretz Group told employees that Baruch Shi will become editor of TheMarker and is expected to take over in mid-July. Haaretz editor Aluf Benn said, “I am happy to announce the appointment of Baruch Shi as editor of TheMarker.” The group said Shi will be tasked with leading the business newspaper to a stronger position in Israeli financial journalism, growing its readership and subscription base, with emphasis on business and economic coverage, new formats and digital innovation.
Shi is currently deputy CEO of i24NEWS in Hebrew, and he informed staff there that he will end his role during the coming month. In a message to the channel’s employees, he said he joined i24NEWS about a year and a half ago and found “a cohesive, hardworking, dedicated and purposeful team.” He added that the channel has become a significant part of Israeli public life, with flagship programs, magazines and scoops that began in Jaffa and resonated nationwide.
Before i24NEWS, Shi was head of the news division at the public broadcaster Kan and one of the founders of its news department. He had asked to leave that post before the end of his term. Earlier in his career he held editorial roles at Channel 10, where his last position was editor of the main evening newscast.
Shi is returning to the Haaretz Group, where he began his career more than two decades ago as a sports editor and later as head of the news desk. He is replacing Sivan Klingbail, who edited TheMarker since 2020 and told staff at the end of March that she wanted to step down as editor-in-chief and focus on writing. Klingbail said those were “fascinating and productive years,” but added that the past few years had been very difficult for her personally and that she needed time to recover.
She said she would continue editing until she went on leave, after which an acting editor would be appointed until a permanent replacement was chosen. In recent weeks, amid turmoil at Calcalist, several names circulated as possible candidates for the job, including senior economic journalist Shaul Amsterdamski, though those talks reportedly did not advance. I24NEWS Hebrew manager Yisrael Twito thanked Shi and said he would be greatly missed.
