Hundreds of Daf Yomi learners and Bnei Brak residents gathered in the city’s Gur seminary hall for an unusual halachic event titled, “Hearing is not like seeing.” At the center of the evening was a rare, hands-on demonstration by a rabbi and certified shochet from the city’s slaughter system.
During the program, a lamb and a rooster were slaughtered, and those present performed the mitzvah of covering the blood with earth according to Jewish law. To illustrate the laws of identifying kosher fish, a kosher fish was brought in, opened, and its internal contents were shown to the audience. The evening also included a close-up demonstration of the internal organs of the lamb and other parts from animals and poultry, giving learners a concrete understanding they could carry through the tractate.
The event was attended and led by the city’s rabbis, lecturers, and a large crowd. The main address and words of blessing and halacha were delivered by Bnei Brak’s rabbi, Rabbi Shevach Tzvi Rosenblatt, and the Ziditchover Rebbe. Mayor Hanoch Zeibert and his deputy Yehoshua Mendel also offered blessings. Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Salomon opened and moderated the gathering.
At the close of the ceremony, the crowd broke into exuberant dancing in honor of the Torah, and at the eastern table the slaughtered lamb was lifted high and joined the dancing circles.
