Adams thanked the President for his commitment to New York and stated that their discussion focused on lowering the cost of living. A key topic was Adams' request for $21 billion in federal aid for the "Sunnyside Yards" project, a plan to build a new neighborhood with 12,000 affordable housing units and create 30,000 jobs. The two sides agreed to open direct talks between New York City housing teams and the White House.
The meeting also addressed immigration, with Adams emphasizing the critical importance of legal status for the Haitian community to the city's economy and security, following the Trump administration's decision to end deportation protections for approximately 350,000 Haitians. This engagement occurs amid a notable softening of Adams' stance towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close ally of Trump. Adams, who had previously vowed to arrest Netanyahu over the Gaza war, recently acknowledged he lacked the authority to order such an action and stated he had never encouraged protests against Netanyahu, a departure from his earlier remarks.
The developing relationship between Trump and Adams began in November last year and has been maintained through various meetings and direct communications. Despite Trump's public criticisms of New York's crime rates and his warnings about business flight due to taxes, their shared interest in infrastructure projects has fostered a connection.
