German Chancellor Warns of Rising Antisemitism After Election Losses

Following significant electoral defeats for his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a stark warning regarding the safety of the Jewish community in Germany. Merz declared that the rise of overt antisemitism has become one of the nation's most serious problems, stating that the security of Jews can no longer be taken for granted.

The CDU experienced historically poor results, falling below 5% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and failing to enter the state parliament, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured approximately 38% of the vote there. In Berlin, the CDU lost its leading position to The Left party.

Despite the election outcomes, Merz focused his remarks on the issue of antisemitism, particularly in light of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. He described the current situation as "the heaviest legacy of recent years" and called antisemitic incidents "a disgrace for Germany." Merz pledged to utilize state resources to protect Jewish communities.

The issue of antisemitism has also complicated coalition formation in Berlin, where The Left party emerged victorious. Potential coalition partners, the Social Democrats and the Greens, are demanding a clear stance on antisemitism from their potential allies. A campaign event by The Left in Berlin's Neukölln district, featuring slogans against the IDF and calls for an intifada, has further fueled controversy, prompting the local Left party leader, Elif Eralp, to distance herself from the statements and call for an investigation.
