Israel's 'Beeper Operation' Crippled Hezbollah, Shattered Nasrallah's Confidence

Two years after a sophisticated Israeli operation, codenamed "Operation Beepers," crippled Hezbollah's command and control, the full scope of its impact is becoming clear. The operation, executed by the Mossad, involved embedding tiny explosive devices into nearly 5,000 communication beepers distributed to Hezbollah operatives. When activated by a remote signal, these devices detonated simultaneously, causing widespread casualties and chaos.

The attack resulted in approximately 5,000 injured, hundreds severely, and over twenty fatalities, including senior Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders. Reports from Lebanon indicated that even the Iranian ambassador, Mojtaba Ameri, was injured, losing sight in one eye, which analysts interpreted as a sign of deep Iranian involvement in Hezbollah's decision-making.

Footage of operatives collapsing after the explosions flooded social media, amplifying the psychological impact. Hezbollah operatives were ordered to discard their devices, fearing further detonations. Israeli sources claimed to have intercepted panicked communications within the organization.

The Mossad produced the devices, with production accelerating after October 7, 2023, under the direction of then-Director Dedi Barnea. The complex manufacturing process, involving hand-assembly of explosives into the beepers without detection, took place in an unconventional setting: the Mossad's gym, repurposed for round-the-clock production. The idea, conceived years earlier, was revived and pushed forward by Barnea, who believed in its potential to break Hezbollah's spirit.

Intelligence assessments suggest the operation profoundly affected Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. His close aides and security personnel were among those injured or killed near him, leading him to feel vulnerable and personally responsible. His son, Jawad, later revealed Nasrallah fell into a deep depression following the beeper operation and another assassination, stating his father was "no longer with us." Nasrallah himself described the beeper attack in a pre-assassination speech as a "severe and unprecedented security blow" and a "declaration of war."

The operation's success, which received final approval from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after he personally tested a device, not only disrupted Hezbollah's capabilities but also served as inspiration for further advanced technological developments within Israel's defense establishment.
