Former Barcelona Prospect Guy Assulin Reflects on Messi, Career Struggles, and New Coaching Role

Guy Assulin, once dubbed 'the new Messi,' has resurfaced in a rare interview, discussing his early years at Barcelona's La Masia academy, his struggles with injuries, and his current life in England as a youth coach. Assulin, now 35, recounted how Barcelona scouted him at age 12 during a tournament in Andorra, leading to his move to Spain. He described the experience of leaving his small Israeli hometown for a global club as a dream come true, though he admitted to facing loneliness and bullying for his accent during his seven years with the Catalan giants.

Assulin's professional career saw him move to Manchester City in 2011, but limited first-team opportunities led him back to Spain, where he played for various clubs. He fondly recalled playing alongside Lionel Messi, describing him as an 'amazing' and 'humble' individual who always offered support and advice. Assulin also shared memories of scoring his first professional goal for Racing Santander and playing in front of massive crowds at Wembley and Camp Nou.

Despite the challenges, including being separated from his family for extended periods due to the lack of modern communication technology, Assulin stated that the experience ultimately helped him mature. He is now based in England with his wife and daughter and is currently coaching Manchester United's under-9 team.
