Drones have evolved from intelligence-gathering tools to central components in modern warfare, with their lethality measured by a combination of armament, range, endurance, operational use, and battlefield impact. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have underscored the significance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as critical weapons systems.
The landscape of drones ranges from multi-million dollar, high-altitude, long-endurance platforms capable of carrying missiles and bombs, to cheaper, disposable "suicide" drones produced in large numbers for attacking infrastructure and defenses. The MQ-9 Reaper, a U.S.-made drone, exemplifies the former, offering extended loiter times, advanced sensors, and precise strike capabilities with a maximum takeoff weight of 4.8 tons and a payload of 1.7 tons. It has been deployed in various theaters, including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, for counter-terrorism operations.
