Israel Threatens UK Consulate Closure Amid E1 Settlement Dispute

A diplomatic crisis between Israel and the United Kingdom has escalated over settlement construction in the E1 area, located between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim. The dispute reportedly stems from a phone call last month between Israeli Foreign Minister G Gideon Sa'ar and his British counterpart, David Cameron, concerning new housing tenders in E1. According to N12, citing the New York Times, the British side understood Sa'ar had pledged to halt new tender publications before Israel's elections. However, just a week later, Israel released tenders for approximately 1,200 housing units.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry vehemently denied the British account, stating Sa'ar only committed to no "change on the ground itself." This divergence in understanding led to a significant diplomatic fallout. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron announced a new policy prohibiting trade with settlements and accused settlers of "ethnic cleansing."

In response, Sa'ar criticized the British stance, declaring Israel would not cede its land "under pressure from jihadists, Islamists, antisemites, and extreme leftists." He further threatened to close the British Consulate in East Jerusalem. Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also condemned the British move, calling it a "cynical attack driven by internal politics."
