Israel Faces Critical Juncture: Regional Power or Collapse, Warns Think Tank
A recent study by the "MIND Israel" organization, which focuses on foreign and defense policy strategy, warns that Israel stands at a critical crossroads, facing a potential collapse if internal weaknesses are not addressed, despite its potential to become a regional power. Dr. Avner Golub, the organization's vice president, stated that "if we do not address these foundations, not only will we not be a superpower, with all the benefits that entails, but the entire structure will collapse."
The non-partisan organization, led by retired Major General Amos Yadlin, has identified six critical issues requiring immediate decisions ahead of the upcoming elections. These include Israel's regional standing, human capital quality, the interplay between economy and security, governance and national resilience, demographic shifts, and relations with the United States and global Jewry. The study, involving 100 experts, highlights education as the foundational element underlying these challenges.
Golub emphasized that civilizations typically decline from internal decay rather than external conquest, citing social cohesion erosion, declining trust in state institutions, prioritizing short-term political gain over long-term national benefit, and perceptual rigidity as key factors. He believes these internal issues will inevitably impact foreign and defense policy.
The organization has developed a four-year strategic plan and a "100-day plan" for the next government, aiming to foster consensus. Golub noted two prevailing viewpoints: one optimistic about Israel's resilience and potential for superpower status, citing its handling of recent crises and its technological and economic strengths; the other pessimistic, warning of an ongoing collapse due to identity crises, loss of governance, and a diplomatic emergency.
MIND Israel urges the public to question political leaders about their plans for these critical issues, rather than focusing solely on political alliances. They advocate for a "Iron Wall 2.0" strategy, moving beyond passive defense to actively shaping the regional environment, building bridges with moderate Arab nations like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan, and fostering interdependence in technology, security, and academia. The next government must also address conscription, a larger defense budget, integrating Haredi and Arab populations, technological infrastructure, a diplomatic vision, and educational reform, with the understanding that broad consensus is essential for national strength.
