Israeli Lawmakers Demand IDF Data on Haredi Draft Evasion Arrests

Four Israeli Knesset members have formally requested comprehensive data from the Military Advocate General regarding the number of arrests of Haredi draft evaders. The lawmakers, Efrat Reiten (Democrats), Ram Ben Barak and Orit Farkash-Hacohen (Yesh Atid), and Oded Forer (Yisrael Beiteinu), expressed concern that enforcement actions against Haredi men evading military service have drastically decreased, potentially ceasing altogether, since a law suspending their arrests was enacted and subsequently overturned by the High Court of Justice on September 3, 2026. They argue that equitable enforcement of military service obligations is crucial for the Israel Defense Forces' ability to recruit and for maintaining fairness towards hundreds of thousands of regular and reserve soldiers bearing the security burden.

The MKs are demanding clarification from the IDF that enforcement proceedings against yeshiva students liable for enlistment are continuing in accordance with the law and established IDF policy, following the High Court's decision to nullify the law that had previously suspended arrests of "Otef Israel" students. They specifically requested detailed monthly arrest figures for 2026, with a separate breakdown for July-September and the period since the High Court's ruling. Furthermore, they seek an explanation for any significant change in enforcement activity, the reasoning behind it, and whether the IDF intends to resume previous levels of enforcement.
