Israeli Lawmakers Demand Answers on Drop in Ultra-Orthodox Draft Evasion Arrests

Four Israeli lawmakers have formally requested clarification from the Military Advocate General regarding a perceived sharp decline in arrests of ultra-Orthodox draft evaders. The MKs, Efrat Reiten, Ram Ben Barak, Orit Farkash-Hacohen, and Oded Forer, expressed concern that enforcement actions against those evading mandatory military service have significantly decreased, potentially ceasing altogether, since a law to freeze these arrests was enacted and subsequently canceled by the High Court of Justice on September 3rd. They argue that equitable enforcement of military service obligations is crucial for the Israel Defense Forces' ability to recruit and for maintaining fairness towards soldiers serving regular and reserve duty.

The lawmakers are demanding confirmation from the IDF that enforcement procedures against yeshiva students liable for conscription are continuing as legally mandated, following the High Court's decision to strike down the law that had previously halted arrests of students studying in religious seminaries (known as 'Avrechim'). They have requested comprehensive and updated data on the number of arrests of such individuals throughout 2026, broken down by month, with specific attention to the period following the September 3rd court ruling.

Furthermore, the MKs seek an explanation for any substantial changes in enforcement activities, the reasoning behind them, and whether the IDF intends to revert to previous levels of enforcement that predated the controversial law. The lawmakers emphasized that the issue extends beyond legal matters, impacting the IDF's strength and the public's trust.
