Prominent Rabbi Performs Ritual Slaughter and Blood Covering
Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein, the chief rabbi of the Ramat Elchanan neighborhood, was photographed performing the 'Kaparot' ritual, a pre-Yom Kippur custom involving the symbolic transfer of sins to a chicken. The ritual took place in the courtyard of Rabbi Zilberstein's home.
Following the ritual slaughter of the chicken by Rabbi Mordechai Glai, a veteran kosher butcher and close associate of Rabbi Zilberstein, the rabbi proceeded to fulfill the commandment of covering the blood of the slaughtered bird. This act is traditionally performed after the slaughter of certain animals, including fowl, before the Day of Atonement.
