Indonesian President Shifts Tone on Israel, Backs Palestine

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto publicly voiced support for Palestine during a speech in East Java, urging his nation to strengthen its power amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Speaking at an event marking the 100th anniversary of the Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Ponorogo Islamic boarding school, Subianto joined attendees in chanting "Free Palestine."

This statement marks a shift from his address at the UN General Assembly nearly a year prior, where he unexpectedly emphasized the need for Israel's recognition and security, concluding his speech with "Shalom."

Following his UN address, reports emerged suggesting a potential visit by Subianto to Israel after a ceasefire and hostage release agreement in Gaza. However, Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied these reports. Another source indicated that while the president had approved the trip, he later canceled it due to a media leak, fearing a negative domestic reaction.

During his recent East Java appearance, Subianto stated that the continued attacks on Palestinians should serve as motivation for Indonesia to become stronger. The Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, Abdelfattah A.K. Al-Sattari, presented the president with a keffiyeh during the event.
