Iran Accelerates Nuclear Site Reconstruction After Israeli Strikes

New satellite imagery indicates that Iran has significantly accelerated the reconstruction of the Taleghan 2 facility at the Parchin military complex, which has been repeatedly targeted by Israel. The images, taken on September 13 and published on September 19, show a large tarp erected over the damaged structure, likely to conceal ongoing construction work from aerial and satellite surveillance. According to the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), construction vehicles, including bulldozers, cranes, and concrete mixers, are actively working on the site. New concrete structures are also being erected, potentially to enhance the facility's resistance to future strikes.

Taleghan 2 was first struck by Israel in October 2024, reportedly in retaliation for an Iranian missile attack. Following this, Iran began repairs, reinforcing the structure with steel, concrete, and soil. The facility was hit again by the Israeli Air Force in March 2026, amid the recent war. Satellite images after this second strike revealed significant damage to the area.

Reconstruction efforts after the March strike commenced in June, initially focusing on covering penetration holes with reinforced concrete. The pace of construction has since markedly increased. The Israeli military has stated that in recent years, Iran used the Parchin site for the development of advanced explosives and sensitive experiments as part of its alleged secret nuclear weapons program, known as AMAD. Western intelligence has suggested that Iran conducted tests related to nuclear bomb detonations at the site over two decades ago.

While Iran denies pursuing nuclear weapons, the current purpose of the reconstructed facility remains unknown. Experts suggest the ongoing work may aim not only to restore the site but also to bolster its defenses against potential future aerial attacks. The facility was previously described by the IDF as being used for "the development of advanced explosives and for conducting sensitive experiments as part of the AMAD Project."
