Professor Explores Outdoor Learning to Foster Environmental Awareness

Professor Tali Tal of the Technion's Faculty of Education in Science and Technology advocates for learning outside the traditional classroom, emphasizing its significance in fostering environmental understanding and engagement, particularly among children. Her research focuses on how to make science and environmental education more engaging and relevant, moving beyond rote memorization to cultivate genuine curiosity and critical thinking.

Tal's own journey from studying plant ecology to pursuing a doctorate in science education highlights her passion for connecting people, especially youth, with the natural world and inspiring them to protect it. Through case studies, like one involving high school students analyzing the pros and cons of natural gas export, her research demonstrates that this approach enhances students' argumentation skills, decision-making abilities, and understanding of complex systems.

Furthermore, Professor Tal is involved in "citizen science," a field that bridges the gap between professional researchers and the public. Projects like "Yes to the Birds," which engages Jewish and Arab students in ecological monitoring for a river restoration initiative, show that participants develop both ecological knowledge and a personal connection to their environment. Tal believes that expanding learning beyond classroom walls and creating experiences that spark real curiosity are crucial for addressing the shortage of effective science teachers in Israel and for cultivating environmentally conscious citizens.
