Netanyahu Taps Yaakov Bardugo as Communications Minister Pick

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tapped Yaakov Bardugo, a former political commentator for Channel 14, as his preferred candidate for the role of Communications Minister should he be re-elected. Netanyahu has mentioned Bardugo as a potential appointee on two separate occasions, expressing a desire for an effective minister capable of enacting significant reforms in the telecommunications market.

Bardugo, who previously expressed interest in the Justice Ministry, is now being considered for Communications, a position currently held by Shlomo Karai, who is ranked 27th in the Knesset. This lower ranking might be a factor in Netanyahu's decision.

During his tenure as a commentator, Bardugo was known for his strong criticisms of opposition politicians, military leaders, and even some Likud ministers, with whom he had public disputes. Notably, he called then-IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi a "political figure" and urged his resignation. Bardugo also reportedly met with Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar in July, demanding a criminal investigation into Channel 12 for reporting on the timing of Operation "Lion's Roar."

Despite these reports, a Likud spokesperson stated that the Prime Minister is currently focused solely on securing a victory for the Likud party and preventing a left-wing government led by Benny Gantz, rather than on appointments and job allocations.
