Israeli-Canadian Man Freed After 11 Years in Iraqi Kurdistan Prison

The story · English

An Israeli-Canadian citizen, Binyamin Ben Limor Hasin, has returned to Israel after serving approximately 11 years in prison in Iraqi Kurdistan. Hasin, originally from Iraqi Kurdistan, had traveled there in 2014 to visit his grandparents in an area where Kurds were fighting the Islamic State. A taxi driver, overhearing Hasin speak Hebrew, threatened to turn him over to ISIS. A struggle ensued, during which Hasin fatally wounded the taxi driver.

Hasin was arrested and, in 2020, sentenced to death by a court in the Kurdish Autonomous Region. Following lengthy negotiations with the victim's family, they agreed to accept blood money for the killing, a practice known as "sulha." This agreement led to the commutation of his death sentence, but Hasin remained imprisoned.

His eventual release was secured through a recent deal with the deceased's family. N12 reports that Hasin is accompanied by his American lawyer, Alan Lowy, who had worked for years to secure his freedom. Upon arriving at the airport, Hasin requested a stop by the sea on his way home, according to Walla.
