Report: Iran, China, Israeli Firms Use AI Bot Armies Online
U.S. intelligence officials have identified a "worrying breakthrough" in online influence operations, according to the New York Times. Iran, China, and private Israeli companies are reportedly deploying artificial intelligence-powered "bot armies" that operate autonomously. These bots create fake profiles, post content, and engage in online discussions without human intervention.
This development has raised significant concerns in Washington regarding the potential to influence upcoming U.S. midterm elections. The report specifically names IntelEye, a Tel Aviv-based company founded by former NSO employees, as a key player on the Israeli side.
IntelEye allegedly operated approximately 1,000 fake accounts that interfered in Israeli political discourse, disseminating content both for and against Prime Minister Netanyahu. The company, however, maintains that its activities were solely part of a research experiment.
