Election Committee Chair Denies Bereaved Families Access to Hearing

Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg has rejected a request by bereaved families to attend a hearing concerning the disqualification of the Ra'am party. The families, who initiated the petition and provided extensive evidence against Ra'am, sought to have a small number of parents present in the auditorium alongside their legal representative.

Sohlberg cited limited seating in the 330-seat auditorium, stating that members of the committee, Ra'am representatives, lawyers, staff, security, and media needed to be accommodated. While media representatives were granted seats, the bereaved parents were excluded. This decision has sparked outrage, with the "Choosing Life" forum, representing the families, calling the ruling "outrageous and offensive."

The forum emphasized that the families are the official petitioners and have spent years compiling over a thousand pages of evidence against Ra'am, arguing that their connection to the case is direct and profound, as Ra'am is linked to entities that fund Hamas, the organization responsible for the deaths of their loved ones.

Sohlberg's decision also included a statement that the families' connection to the matter "is not relatively high," and that this was not a request to disqualify specific terrorists who killed their family members. The forum countered that this statement is "miserable and completely disconnected" from the petition, which addresses financial support for groups linked to Hamas.

Instead of allowing the families physical presence, Sohlberg offered them the option to watch the proceedings via online broadcast. The "Choosing Life" forum expressed deep disappointment, stating that the judge chose to "close the doors of the hall" on those who have paid the heaviest price, rather than listen to them.
