Idan Alterman Credits Mother for Humor, Unpredictability

Comedian Idan Alterman, 55, shared insights into his relationship with his mother, Rachel Alterman, 80, a prominent urban planner and Technion professor. Alterman frequently references his mother and the upbringing she provided in his stand-up routines and social media content. He described his mother as "unpredictable" and "uncontrollable" during his childhood, keeping him and his friends on alert for unexpected behavior, though he also emphasized her caring and loving nature.

Rachel Alterman, who was elected to the Israeli National Academy of Sciences in 2022, recalled Idan showing a talent for making people laugh from a very young age. She stated that she and her husband, Doron, never pushed him towards a specific career, instead allowing him to develop his natural inclinations. She also recounted an incident where a commenter insulted her online, to which Idan responded by highlighting her academic achievements, a story that went viral.

Alterman attributes his sense of humor to his mother and his maternal grandfather, a historian with a theatrical flair. Rachel noted the strong personality resemblance between herself and her son, humorously stating that the only difference is Idan has a manager.

Alterman has adopted his mother's habit of calling his own children "child" or "girl," a term of endearment that sometimes causes confusion in public.
