Israeli Minister Praises Ties With Austrian Party Linked to Neo-Nazis

Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, Amichai Chikli, announced a "historic turnaround" in relations between his Likud party and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). Chikli stated that the FPÖ, which has roots in Nazism, is now a "partner" and that the Likud party will hold an event with Austrian party members.

Chikli's remarks came after a meeting with FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl. The Israeli minister expressed satisfaction with the "deepening of ties" and highlighted the FPÖ's shift towards a more mainstream political stance. He specifically mentioned that the party has "moved away from the extreme right" and is now focused on "national interests."

However, the move has drawn criticism. The FPÖ has a history of controversial statements and associations with far-right and neo-Nazi elements. Critics argue that normalizing relations with such a party undermines Israel's commitment to combating antisemitism and extremism. Chikli, however, defended the engagement, asserting that the FPÖ is a legitimate political force in Austria and that dialogue is essential for understanding and influencing their positions.
