Ireland Coach Admits Discomfort Playing Israel Amidst Unspecified Issues
The Republic of Ireland national football team has announced its squad for the upcoming Nations League campaign, which includes two matches against Israel. Ireland will first play Kosovo in Pristina on Thursday, followed by a match against Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, the following Sunday. They will then host Austria on October 1st before facing Israel again in Serbia on October 4th.
Coach Heimir Hallgrímsson will be without several key players due to injuries, including Nathan Collins, Evan Ferguson, Josh Cullen, Jack Taylor, and Oisín McEntee. Seamus Coleman and Robbie Brady were also omitted as they are currently without clubs. However, Sheffield United defender Liam Kitching and Cardiff City's Joel Bagan have been called up, as has Hibernian striker Evan Adoing, who receives his first senior call-up.
Ireland enters these matches on a positive note, boasting a seven-game unbeaten streak. "We are on a positive trend and want to continue it," Hallgrímsson stated. "We haven't lost in seven games, and I hope that continues for a long time. I don't think there's a team right now that wants to play against Ireland."
The main focus surrounding the Irish squad is the upcoming games against Israel. Hallgrímsson revealed he spoke with his players individually about the matches, emphasizing that despite their feelings, the team is committed to playing. "I spoke with each of them personally. None of us feel comfortable playing these games, but once we decided to play them, we remain united and represent Ireland," the coach said.
