Rabbi Seals Ears, Scolds Student for Reciting Blessing Prematurely

The story · English

An unusual moment occurred at the Ponevezh Yeshiva on the eve of Rosh Hashanah when Rabbi Bunim Schreiber, head of the Ashdod rabbinical court and Rosh Yeshiva of 'Nativ HaDa'at', entered the hall before delivering a lesson. One student, however, declared "By permission!" and recited the blessing of "She'hecheyanu" (who has sustained us) with God's name and sovereignty, in front of the rabbi and numerous students. Rabbi Schreiber reacted by covering his ears and admonishing the student, calling the blessing "a blessing in vain."
