China Urges Iran to Restrain Houthis Amid Red Sea Tensions

Saudi Arabia has approached China seeking assistance in de-escalating the conflict with the Houthis and halting the escalation of the war in Yemen. In response to the Saudi request, China has reportedly sent a confidential message to Iran, urging Tehran to "use your influence to restrain the Houthis." According to three Iranian sources, China did not issue explicit threats or hint at sanctions if Iran did not comply. However, Beijing emphasized the importance of preventing the conflict from expanding into energy routes crucial for the Chinese economy. China also called for "restraint, dialogue, and the restoration of security to international shipping lanes."

Iran, in its response, stated that "stability and peace in the region depend on ending the war by the US and Israel against Iran." The Chinese Foreign Ministry commented on the report, stating that "Beijing does not wish to see regional tensions spill over into Yemen and the Red Sea. The exacerbation of instability in the region serves no party."
