Top Democrat Blocks $2.8 Billion US Arms Sale to Israel

U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has blocked a proposed $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel. Meeks cited concerns that the sale, which includes 2,000-pound bombs, could be used in violation of U.S. and international law, particularly in densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon.

In a statement, Meeks emphasized his continued commitment to Israel's security but stated that the Biden administration had not provided sufficient assurances that the Netanyahu government would use the weapons responsibly and in accordance with U.S. law, with due care for civilian protection. He clarified that his action was an exercise of Congress's oversight responsibility, not an attempt to weaken Israel's defense capabilities.

While individual lawmakers cannot unilaterally cancel arms deals, they can impose a hold to request further information. Meeks previously used this mechanism in April 2024 to temporarily block an F-15 fighter jet sale, seeking clarification on their intended use. Israel maintains that its use of U.S.-supplied weapons always complies with American and international law.

This move reflects a growing debate in Washington regarding the conditions attached to military aid for Israel.
