Iran Captures US Submersible, Eyes Reverse Engineering
Iran has reportedly captured a complete US unmanned submersible, the Dive-LD, manufactured by Anduril. This acquisition is significant as it allows Iran to potentially reverse engineer the technology, a process where a captured device is analyzed to replicate its design and components. Iran has a history of reverse engineering foreign military hardware, notably the US RQ-170 Sentinel drone captured in 2011. The Dive-LD is designed for extended underwater intelligence gathering missions, reflecting a broader trend towards unmanned systems in naval warfare.
This incident occurs amidst ongoing tensions where Iran has also claimed to intercept numerous US drones and inflict financial damage on US munitions expenditure during operations like "Operation Gallant Fury." The capture of the submersible represents a new tactical achievement for Iran in its ongoing confrontations with the United States.
In other defense industry news, Israeli drone company Aero-Sentinel is aiming for mass production of its collection drones, potentially lowering costs from around $30,000 to $20,000-$25,000 per unit. This is significantly cheaper than comparable US drones, which can cost up to $50,000, and French drones at $35,000-$40,000. Chinese drones, like the EVO model purchased by the IDF, are even cheaper at $10,000-$15,000.
Romania has shown interest in Aero-Sentinel's technology, having previously purchased Rafael's SPYDER air defense systems for over 2 billion euros. Aero-Sentinel recently demonstrated its G2 drone's operational capabilities in Romania, showcasing its resilience against jamming and spoofing.
Meanwhile, the UAE's Edge defense conglomerate announced a 1 billion euro deal to supply six HT-100 unmanned maritime helicopters to Angola. These helicopters, designed for naval operations and equipped with electro-optical/infrared sensors, will be integrated onto three corvettes. Edge has a notable Israeli connection, having recently acquired a 30% stake in the AI-based electro-optical systems developer, Israeli company Third Eye.
