US Extends Visa Sanctions on Palestinian Authority and PLO Officials

The United States announced it will extend visa sanctions against senior officials of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The State Department determined that these officials continue to fail in meeting their commitments to Washington.

According to the State Department's announcement, the PA and PLO are accused of pursuing actions against Israel at the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice in The Hague. They are also reportedly seeking to advance unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state and continuing payments to "terrorists" while "glorifying terror."

These sanctions come shortly after the US denied a visa request for PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, preventing him from traveling to New York to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly next week. However, the existing exemption for personnel of the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN will remain in effect.

The decision to extend the sanctions highlights ongoing tensions and the US's stance on Palestinian diplomatic and legal actions against Israel.
