President Herzog Calls for Swift Resolution to Netanyahu's Trial

President Isaac Herzog expressed his hope to mediate a resolution to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ongoing trial, suggesting a reconciliation process at the President's Residence. In an interview with Mako Tuvia on Channel 14, Herzog stated that he believes the trial should conclude due to its "very negative impact on the country," emphasizing that he has "no preconditions" for such a move. He proposed this mediation effort months ago, aiming to bring the involved parties together.

Regarding the upcoming elections, Herzog indicated that while he has no concrete evidence of attempts to "steal" the vote, potential scenarios for election disruption are being examined. He stressed his confidence in the Central Elections Committee's preparedness for various eventualities, especially in the dynamic digital landscape.

Herzog also strongly condemned the controversial film "Nez'a," calling it a "shame and disgrace." He criticized the film for its alleged disregard of the October 7th massacre and the atrocities committed by Hamas, asserting that while freedom of expression is vital in a democracy, the film spreads "lies and slander" against IDF soldiers and security forces.

On the sensitive issue of drafting Haredi men into the military, Herzog stated he is "not enthusiastic about arrest measures." He acknowledged the importance of both military service and Torah study, suggesting that integration is possible and that the government needs to find alternative sanctions beyond arrests. He also touched upon the issue of equal burden, noting a demand for civil service among Arab youth but differentiating it from the Haredi draft issue.

Furthermore, Herzog reiterated his support for a state inquiry commission to investigate the events of October 7th, leaving the final decision on its structure to the Knesset. He also cautioned against preemptively labeling judicial decisions as biased, urging against excessive worry and attempts to politicize the judiciary.
