Israeli Pub Sues IKEA Over Shot Glass Volume Discrepancy
A pub in Israel's Hula Valley, "Ha'Pitria" from Kibbutz Dan, is seeking court permission to file a class-action lawsuit against IKEA, alleging that its "FIGURERA" shot glasses hold 20% more liquid than advertised. The pub claims the glasses are marketed as holding 2.5 centiliters (25 milliliters) but actually contain 30 milliliters, a discrepancy of 5 milliliters. This alleged overage, the pub argues, has caused significant financial damage to food and beverage establishments across Israel that relied on the stated volume for pricing alcoholic drinks.
The lawsuit, filed in the Central District Court against IKEA Israel (Livne Tzfoni) and Sweden's IKEA of Sweden AB, states that bars and restaurants priced their drinks based on the assumption of a 25-milliliter pour. Consequently, customers have been receiving 20% more alcohol than they paid for, leading to substantial losses for businesses. The pub asserts that IKEA provided no disclaimers regarding the actual capacity of the shot glasses.
"Ha'Pitria" purchased 1,728 of these shot glasses from IKEA between 2021 and 2026. The issue reportedly came to light when a customer pointed out the discrepancy to the pub's owner. After conducting tests, the owner confirmed the glasses held 30 milliliters and subsequently stopped using them, opting for glasses from another supplier with a verified 25-milliliter capacity.
The pub is requesting permission to represent all Israeli businesses that purchased IKEA's 2.5-centiliter FIGURERA shot glasses or similar products in the past seven years. They seek compensation calculated to cover the equivalent of the additional 20% of all alcohol portions served using these glasses, estimating the total damages to exceed 2.5 million shekels. The lawsuit also asks the court to prohibit IKEA from continuing to advertise the misleading volume.
IKEA Israel stated that they had not yet received the lawsuit but would review the claims and respond accordingly once they have the necessary documents.
