Arab Political Party Denounces Bid to Disqualify Lawmaker

The Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (DFPE), also known as Tajammu, issued a statement on Wednesday condemning a petition filed by the Otzma Yehudit party seeking to disqualify DFPE party head Sami Abu Shehadeh from running for the Knesset. The DFPE described the move as a new phase in a campaign of incitement and political persecution aimed at delegitimizing Arab citizens, their leaders, and their political representatives.

The DFPE highlighted the irony that the petition was initiated by Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has a prior conviction for inciting racism and supporting a terrorist organization, and is now attempting to dictate who can run in elections. The party asserted that Sami Abu Shehadeh has a long history as a political and social activist dedicated to human rights, his people's rights, freedom, justice, and equality, with his political stances part of a public struggle for a future of freedom, justice, and equality for both Palestinians and Jews.

The DFPE emphasized its consistent articulation of national and humanitarian positions, commitment to peaceful political and civil struggle, rejection of civilian targeting and bloodshed, and opposition to war and its devastating consequences. Simultaneously, the party affirmed its dedication to defending the Palestinian people's national rights, their right to freedom, dignity, justice, and an end to the occupation.

The statement argued that opposing war and civilian targeting is a principled humanitarian stance, just as opposing occupation, oppression, discrimination, and defending Palestinian rights is a legitimate political and national position. It accused its opponents of deliberately conflating these issues or taking statements out of context to delegitimize national Palestinian stances and use disqualification as a tool for political exclusion.

The DFPE concluded that the targeting of Abu Shehadeh is linked to attempts to disqualify the Joint List and the United Arab List, as well as the activist Ofer Cassif. The widening scope of these attacks, despite political differences among the targeted groups, raises serious concerns about the shrinking space for political action and democratic representation, and the targeting of Arab and Jewish voices opposing war, occupation, and racism, while advocating for equality and justice.
