US Faces $184 Million in Damage from Iranian Attacks, Defense Report Reveals

A new report from the US Department of Defense's Inspector General has detailed the significant economic and military costs of the conflict with Iran. The report, the first comprehensive assessment of the war, reveals that Iranian attacks have damaged or destroyed hundreds of US military structures across the Middle East, with estimated costs reaching $184 million for diplomatic facilities alone. The conflict has also led to a severe depletion of American munitions and missile stockpiles, raising concerns about defense capabilities.

Hundreds of buildings and facilities at US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan sustained damage or were destroyed. In the initial four weeks of the war, over 850 Tomahawk missiles were fired, and half of the THAAD missile interceptor inventory was used. The report highlights "bottlenecks in the industrial base" that are hindering the replenishment of these critical supplies.

The munitions shortage has become a point of political contention in Washington. Defense Secretary Pete Buttigieg testified to the Senate in July that the war had cost $37.5 billion and requested an additional $67 billion to avoid a budget deficit and restock supplies. He warned of shortages in solid rocket motors, explosives, and skilled manufacturing personnel.

However, President Donald Trump has publicly denied any weapon shortages, asserting on Truth Social that the US is producing more advanced weaponry than ever before. Despite Trump's claims, Pentagon officials have expressed concern that the rapid depletion of stockpiles could compromise readiness for a potential conflict with China. The report also notes the loss of four F-15E fighter jets and damage to an F-35A, along with several helicopters and other aircraft.

The conflict, which began on February 28 with joint US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has resulted in the deaths of 18 American soldiers and the injury of 417. Additionally, approximately 9,000 American civilians evacuated the region, and the State Department incurred costs of about $113 million, impacting aid for health, food, and infrastructure in the Middle East.
