Defense Minister's Delayed Signature Halts Trial of Shin Bet Chief's Brother

A legal proceeding against individuals accused of smuggling goods into Gaza has been stalled for over three months due to a pending signature from Defense Minister Israel Katz. The required authorization is necessary to allow the defendants' legal counsel to review classified evidence in the case, thereby enabling the trial to proceed. Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir has already signed the approval, but Katz's signature remains outstanding.

Among the defendants is Bezalel Zini, the brother of Shin Bet Director-General Ronen Bar. The prosecution requested the transfer of classified materials collected during the investigation to the defendants in February, following the indictment of those involved in January. The delay in Katz's signature, despite repeated reminders from his staff, prevents the classified information from being shared with the defense teams, halting progress in the case.

Katz's office declined to comment on the reason for the prolonged delay. The situation is particularly sensitive given the close working relationship between Defense Minister Katz and Shin Bet Director-General Zini. The ongoing delay impacts the legal process for all defendants in the smuggling case.
