Trump Administration Pursues $2.8 Billion Arms Deal for Israel

The Trump administration is advancing a significant arms deal with Israel valued at approximately $2.8 billion, according to reports. This proposed sale includes 40,000 bombs, with 20,000 being MK-84 general-purpose bombs weighing around 900 kg each, and another 20,000 being BLU-117 bombs, also weighing about 900 kg. The BLU-117 features a special coating for maritime storage and is compatible with various guidance kits. Additionally, the deal encompasses 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads, designed for breaching fortified targets and bunkers.

This transaction represents the largest single sale of heavy munitions to Israel in recent years, surpassing previous sales under both the Biden and Trump administrations. The MK-84 is described as a highly lethal general-purpose bomb effective against soft and moderately protected targets, while the I-2000 is specifically intended for hardened targets.

The deal faces potential political hurdles in the U.S. Congress, particularly among Democrats, amid existing tensions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Over 100 Democratic lawmakers previously voted against further aid to Israel. The Trump administration is reportedly lobbying key congressional committees to secure approval for the sale.

Concerns regarding the use of heavy bombs in densely populated areas have surfaced previously. In the spring of 2024, the Biden administration temporarily halted a shipment of heavy bombs to Israel due to humanitarian concerns. A senior administration official declined to comment on specific humanitarian concerns, stating that all foreign arms sales follow established procedures.
