Maccabi Tel Aviv's Helcio Varela Emerges as League's Top Foreign Player
Helcio Varela has quickly established himself as a pivotal player for Maccabi Tel Aviv, demonstrating significant impact in the team's strong start to the season. In the recent Tel Aviv derby against Hapoel Tel Aviv, Varela's speed and skill led to a crucial foul that resulted in an opponent's red card, shifting the game's momentum. He was instrumental in Maccabi's 4-1 victory, assisting the final goal and being involved in nearly every dangerous attacking play.
Varela's statistics highlight his importance. He has had more touches than any other Maccabi attacker and boasts a high success rate in dribbling attempts, significantly outperforming teammates and opponents. He has been directly involved in four goals (one scored, three assisted) in the first four league matches, playing fewer minutes than teammate Osher Davida, who has three goal involvements.
His current form is a continuation of his confidence boost from participating in the FIFA World Cup with Cape Verde, where he played significant minutes and scored against Uruguay. Maccabi Tel Aviv acquired Varela for €1.7 million in the summer of 2023, a move that now seems exceptionally shrewd given his current estimated value of around €3.4 million. Despite interest from clubs in Azerbaijan, Serbia, and Greece, no substantial offers materialized, and Maccabi successfully retained him, a key decision amid challenges in acquiring new foreign talent.
While Varela's speed, dribbling, and playmaking are evident, the next challenge is maintaining consistent goal-scoring and assist production throughout the entire season. To emulate the success of past Maccabi stars like Wesley Jobello and Felicio Milson, who were sold to European clubs after strong performances, Varela needs to reach double-digit combined goals and assists. His performances in Maccabi's European campaigns, which were cut short, limited his exposure to top-tier scouts, but his continued strong play in the Israeli league could still lead to a significant transfer, potentially after helping Maccabi win the championship.
